The M's set their roster today, at least the roster that will be for the next 11 days, anyway.| 1. By: sevans on 04-04-2009 20:40:40 Correct me if I am wrong, but since neither Shelton nor Wilson are on the 40 man roster they would have to be exposed to waivers when Ichiro returns (if they would be the player sent down). If the M's are truly like both is it worth the risk of losing them in two weeks by going with them rather than Tuiasosopo at this point? |
2. By: Jason A. Churchill on 04-04-2009 21:31:40 They would have first have to have been placed on the 40-man, so yes, another step involved. But it wouldn't have to have been either Wilson or Shelton to be removed. There are a number of names that would go before those two, IMO. LaHair, for example. But at last check, the M's weren't at the limit of 40, and gained another spot when Feierabend was placed on the 60-day DL.
3. By: stickball on 04-04-2009 21:48:42 Wilson would have not been subject to waivers. Shelton has no options left and would have been subject to waivers if he were placed on the 25 man roster and sent down.
4. By: rocketdawg31 on 04-04-2009 23:18:50 I think Tui being on the 25-man really is a curious move,I count at least four guys (Clement, Shelton, Chris Burke, and Mike Wilson) who would rectify the situation better, even with the extra steps involved regarding the 40-man. Thoughts, Jason? By my reckoning, this doesn't add up on the face of it....as either a "reward for Tui" (because he's already made his ML debut) or as a "pure roster move". It makes me wonder what else is going on. I know Beltre is likely to be dealt at some point, but this seems too early for Zduriencik to be burning up cell-phone minutes talking trade...unless there's some emergency 3B situation with another org that I don't know about. The closest thing to that I DO know of to that is Troy Glaus and the St. Louis Cardinals. OR, maybe I'm trying to read too much into it and shouldn't have bothered typing those last three sentences...
5. By: Lonnie on 04-04-2009 23:36:31 Jason, Why is Jamie Burke at AAA instead of being released? I don't understand the rationale for keeping him around. Lord knows I love the guy and I will always hope the best for him, but there comes a time when you have make a hard choice and let the man go. With the seemingly logjam at C I don't see the value of having him around. You know, the only really good reason that I can think of for having Tui on the 25 man roster is to be close at hand in the event that Beltre isn't 100%. Sounds like a bit of a stretch, but it is the only thing that I can think of that makes any sense. Lonnie
6. By: Lonnie on 04-04-2009 23:38:38 Dang, I hate it when I hit "Submit Comment", and then think of something else to add... Jason, what value is there in having Adam Moore repeat AA? That is where he is heading, Isn't it? Lonnie
7. By: Jason A. Churchill on 04-04-2009 23:51:13 Not sure the Burke move lives, and if i does, it may mean Clement is going to play a lot of first base, or enough to warrant a third catcher. No, Moore should be in AAA, AA is a waste of time. Tui is only going to be in the bigs for a week or so, guys. When Ichiro returns, Tui is back to AAA. Remember what would have to happen if they had selected Shelton for that role instead... yeah. This made sense. It was Tui or start the options clock for Saunders, who isn't healthy anyway, or use a 40-man spot Redman, Carp, etc. This just isn't a big deal at all.
8. By: Lonnie on 04-05-2009 00:05:42 Last question, then it's off to... hell, I don't know. How big is the void in talent below Moore/Clement to the next catcher on the depth chart? If Moore/Clement are a 90 on a scale of 1 to 100, where does the next guy sit? I ask this after rereading your notebook segment on prep catchers... Lonnie
9. By: CrockDaddy on 04-05-2009 00:43:44 jason, if joh hits well to start the season does he, does he become tradable?
10. By: Jason A. Churchill on 04-05-2009 00:47:02 It's a dry path between Moore and Clement to teenager Hassiel Jimenez, who has yet to make his stateside debut. The Luis Oliveros,Fleming Baez, Blake Ochoa, Travis Howell, Jose Yepez, and even Emmy Familia and Jonathan Arias types don't profile as big-league catchers. All of them lack something, most of them multiple somethings. Travis Scott's ceiling is as an offense-first, Scott Bradley-type backup at best, and he's probably next after Clement, Moore, and Luis Oliveros, who is not a big-leaguer, either. It's a good year to take a shot at a prep catcher. There are seven that project to go in the top 3 rounds. Bailey, Stassi, Maddox, Escalante, Susac, Walsh, Zunino, and BC catcher Tony Sanchez is creeping up on round one. Dude is tearing the cover off the ball, and has overtaken Indiana's Josh Phegley for the top college catcher in the class.
11. By: Jason A. Churchill on 04-05-2009 00:48:55 Crock, No. If he tore it up all year, repeated 2006 or so, then maybe. But 3/24... ugh. It would still take sending lots of cash out, because he's not a good catcher - AT ALL. But he's swinging it well right now, better than even his solid ST numbers suggest. And he's going the other way a little tiny bit, which is a lot more than ever before. Could be a good sign, but I'll believe it when I see it.
12. By: Lonnie on 04-05-2009 00:51:12 Not with that contract, CrockDaddy. He'd have to do better than hit well, he'd have to turn into something he isn't. Of course, if Seattle is ameniable to eating a huge part of his contract, then anything is possible. Lonnie
13. By: Uncle Al on 04-05-2009 02:01:46 Jason #7 Couldn't agree with you more that this isn't a big deal. They are at 38 on the 40 man roster now and they could create a few more spots through trades. Don't you think there are a few trades going to go down in the next few days? At a minimum, since they didn't feel Corona and Lugo were worth trading for, don't you think they at least pick up two more players on the waiver wire.
14. By: dewey on 04-05-2009 08:37:32 That is a very weak bullpen! Alot of nice storys but not alot of talent out there.Burke and Walk go back to the Angels and Rangers days that might be why Burke is being held on to but thats just a guess! Any predictions im saying we win 65 games.
15. By: Lonnie on 04-05-2009 12:48:25 The bullpen is very weak dewey, that's for sure. I'm pretty confident in Morrow and Kelley, and I'm marginally confident in Jakubauskas and Aardsma. Batista, Corcoran, and Lowe worry me because I think that it is almost a sure thing that every single one will have a good/fair outting followed by a stinker. Or several stinkers. I think that before the season is over we will see Delgado and Olson working out of the pen to help shore it up. I know that Olson is expected to be a starter, but if the bullpen blows lead after lead going into July I think management will do what is neccessary. Half a season of a stretched out Olson working out of the pen as the emergency starter/long relief guy won't hurt him. Lonnie
16. By: Jason A. Churchill on 04-05-2009 13:29:14 Olson is either a 5th starter, or a minor leaguer. he brings very little to the table as a reliever. Kahn is the first name from the minors, as far as pure relievers go.
17. By: cdiggins@whidbey.com on 04-05-2009 13:56:28 I know this was just spring training and that Tui hit well and is there any word on his fielding? I remember when SF Giants brought up Matt Williams (?) back in the 90's for Spring Training and he hit HR's and they kept him and he turned into a very decent player. Is there a chance Tui does that?
18. By: Jason A. Churchill on 04-05-2009 13:58:13 Williams and Tui is a good comp; both were prep shortstops - Williams even played some in college. Williams had better hands, Tui is a little better athlete. Neither good third basemen.
19. By: randallball on 04-05-2009 15:40:02 Williams actually played SS for Everett in his handful of games there in '86 or '87 (?), too. I don't think he was there for more than a week, but I saw 2 games that he played in the NWL.
20. By: bikozu on 04-05-2009 17:14:51 Who plays 3B if Beltre is dealt? Tui? Shelton?
21. By: Jason A. Churchill on 04-05-2009 18:33:05 Tui or Lopez, with Cedeno filling in at second.
