High Desert Mavericks Final Roster

By Jason A. ChurchillBy 04-07-2009

Pitchers
Phillippe Aumont
Nathan Adcock
Natividad Dilone
Michael Pineda
Juan Zapata
Jake Wild
Anthony Varvaro
Alfredo Venegas
Juan Ramirez
Steve Richard
Travis Mortimore
Aaron Jensen (DL)
Donnie Hume
Edward Paredes

Hitters
Travis Scott
Jose Yepez
Ian Bladergroen
Edilio Corona
Juan Diaz
Alex Liddi
Ron Garth
Joe Dunigan
Carlos Peguero
Tyson Gillies
Kuo Hui Lo
Jamie McOwen

If I were putting the lineup together, I'd go:

1. Gillies, CF
2. Garth/Colina, 2B
3. Bladergroen, 1B
4. Scott, C
5. Dunigan, OF/DH
6. Peguero, OF/DH
7. Lo, LF
8. Diaz, SS
9. Liddi, 3B

I'd lean Colina at second since he's more of a prospect than Garth, but Garth is the better player presently, especially at the plate.

May flip Liddi and Diaz, too.

My rotation would be:

1. Aumont
2. Ramirez
3. Pineda
4. Adcock
5. Hume

But since we know Aumont will be in the pen:

1. Ramirez
2. Pineda
3. Adcock
4. Hume
5. Paredes

Pen:

1. Aumont
2. Dilone (showed good stuff ins pring, though he's a bit old at 26 to be a AAA prospect let alone in High A.)
3. Richard
4. Varvaro
5. Mortimore
6. Wild
7. Zapata

Varvaro can also start, but his command/control has not returned since TJ surgery the year before the draft and Hume and Paredes do not profile well in relief work, particularly Hume. But Varvaro and Paredes could be swapped and it would make some sense.

This all means that Carlos Triunfel and Josh Fields are both starting the year in AA West Tennessee with Adam Moore, making that team very, very exciting.

But the Mavs roster is going to be fun, too. But while following this group, remember the treacherous pitching conditions (small parks, wind blowing out, warm air) that help bats and hurt the arms as far as numbers go.

And apparently Venagas, too. Adjusted the roster, but not my projections. Venegas could start or relieve in HD.

Jason,
What do you think we can expect from Nathan Adcock this year?

Since he doesn't have a great fastball - average there - he's going to have to command it very well, and make the right adjustments to his curve ball, an average or better pitch - in that weather and environment.

If he develops an average change to go with it, Adcock will do fine. I think he has enough stuff to be a solid No. 4.

I'm surprised that nobody's mentioned the quick rise of Tyson Gillis. At the very least, he's got a great story. But he got an extended look in Spring Training. And, he's taking a big jump from Everett to High Desert.

Any buzz about him?

What is the background on Bladergroen?

What about Liddi? It seems me he came back from WBC in a very good shape, if he will continue with the numbers he's showing now, it's possible to imagine Alex in ClassAA, after All Stars break?
