I would love to acquire that SP at a lower price than what it would cost to trade for Upton. Plus worst case scenario we are in the same position we were in with Lee...we could trade that SP for more than what it took to originally acquire him.

3.  By: CyFelix on 12-03-2010 13:26:58
I always thought Millwood would be a good fit. He gave up a lot of HR's last year and is an innings eater. I think a change to a pitcher friendly park would help.

4.  By: mazono on 12-03-2010 13:30:58
Thanks JAC... It would be a dream come true if we could pull of Cliff Lee number 2 :)

5.  By: bunvt on 12-03-2010 13:34:16
Good Stuff JAC, keep up the good work. The stove is heating up!

6.  By: StandinPat on 12-03-2010 13:34:22
Millwood makes some sense in that he would def benefit from the park and our defense behind him, but a guy like Jeff Francis, while not a guarantee to be able to throw as many innings, is a better pitcher, and will prob be considerably cheaper.

One name I like that didnt pop up on Jason's list was Johnathan Sanchez. I kind of see him in the same class as Nolasco, Anibal or Bailey. Any Idea is the Giants would trade him, and if so what would be the cost? More than say Nolasco? It sure wouldnt heart to trade for one of those guy's and sign maybe Bonderman. If healthy.

8.  By: Jason A. Churchill on 12-03-2010 14:25:04
Fatbat,

When the season ended I thought so, too, but two things: He may be hurt -- velo was down in Word Series -- and the Giants want a big bat in return or he's staying put.

So he's not even a possibility in Seattle.

should be now.

Id love to get my hands on that RF, but if it costs Gutierrez, who plays CF? Ichiro?

Rasmus makes the most sense for this club, if he is really available. If Gutierrez, Pineda, and a few other pieces (League might be a fit?) can get him, they have to do it.

The Carda would get 3 years of Gutierrez for 4 years of Rasmus, plus the pitching boost and increased clubhouse harmony.

12.  By: Jason A. Churchill on 12-03-2010 17:19:51
jgstecker,

Would it even matter in 2011? If you can get a guy like that, you just get him. Same with Upton, if you don't think Upton can play center and to get him you have to include Gutierrez, you worry about CF later.

Saunders is acceptable there, btw.

13.  By: jgstecker on 12-03-2010 17:54:32
Yeah, I know.

As a fan though, I just love the idea of having a lineup set longterm. Bringing in Rasmus instead of a corner OF solves so many problems. Great lineup balance and longterm solutions at every position.

14.  By: FWBrodie on 12-03-2010 18:14:58
Jason, do you think Jay Bruce is as good defensively as UZR shows?

15.  By: Jason A. Churchill on 12-03-2010 21:21:41
Probably, FW. If you check his three-year UZRs, the past two seasons, the ones that mean the most of the three, are very, very good. It's explainable, so I'd tend to believe it's close.

16.  By: JohnMcD on 12-03-2010 21:56:16
Jason:

I'm curious on your thoughts of the Arroyo deal? Seems to have overpaid him just a tad...How much does this hurt our chances to land a SP via free agency

17.  By: StandinPat on 12-03-2010 23:10:22
by "a tad" did you mean a shit ton?

18.  By: Jason A. Churchill on 12-03-2010 23:38:08
It is certainly going to make guys like Francis look for three year deals, but Harang got one, Garland 1+... it shouldn't do much.

19.  By: marinermutt on 12-04-2010 00:21:35
Just seems like prices for are going way up so far. Arroyo is much higher than I would have guessed. Zach Duke's contract was high as was Takahashi's deal with the Angels. Tejada deal was more than projected and even Jose Lopez got a raise.

If I was an owner, in this ecomony where unemployment is 9.8%, prices should be dropping some. The average fan would understand if the owners held tough on player contracts in this type of environment. If the players balked, they would look to be the greedy group. But I guess baseball owners just can't seem to control themselves.

20.  By: Jason A. Churchill on 12-04-2010 00:38:42
Oh, yes, prices are going up. But some of the risky starters won't get two year offers from anyone, so...

21.  By: JohnMcD on 12-04-2010 00:46:05
Yes, Pat that is what I meant. Any word on who the RedSox are offering for A-Gon? People on Twitter seem to think a deal is close.

22.  By: Jason A. Churchill on 12-04-2010 01:02:22
JohnMcD,

Gordon Edes reported earlier this afternoon that the two sides had made some progress... I think the therm he used was "headway" and apparently it's for a package consisting primarily, or even exclusively, of prospects.

I have to imagine Casey Kelly is included, as well as Anthony Rizzo and maybe even Jose Iglesias the shortstop. But I could see Jacoby Ellsbury and/or Jed Lowrie being involved, too.

If I were San Diego, though, I'm holding out for more pitching, and it doesn't sound like Boston has any interest in dealing Lester or Buchholz.

Maybe they change their mind on Buchholz, but I wouldn't.

jason, i can't get in please assist me,thx

24.  By: safecochatter on 12-04-2010 09:53:05
being reported now,is Casey Kelly, Anthony Rizzo and Reymond Fuentes beening traded to sd for a-gone,according to Buster Olney.

25.  By: shortstop9 on 12-04-2010 10:21:20
How awesome would it be to be involved in all the big moves. We are seriously a major league joke.If we roll out another year like last year nobody will ever come here. Our biggest need is a LF who can bat 3RD and he is sitting right there finally in Crawford. We have no chance to get him and we never will with this group running this team.

"It makes no sense to get him in a rebuilding year" give me a break- the player who could help turn this team around in a spot we have open doesn't come around every year.

26.  By: Rick Randall on 12-04-2010 10:37:05
There is much more involved in building a consistent contender than just being involved in the big moves, shortstop9

Franchises have (at least) 3 different cycles: (re)building, contending, hanging on. Which cycle do you think the M's are in?

The prospect cost, especially from a system that isn't deep at the top, just doesn't make sense if you are in phase 1. It is as simple as that.

A lot of fans - even those that consider themselves highly involved - don't understand that it isn't just as simple as getting everyone that you want. There has to be a fit - for all the teams involved.

27.  By: shortstop9 on 12-04-2010 11:06:24
Yea Crawford doesn't fit here!We are stuck in cycle 2 and always will be.High payroll with a ton of loses. The fan base is starting to drop fast and another year like last will really hurt this franchise for a very long time. If we are in cycle 1 then trade Ichiro and Felix for prospects and really start over. If they are looking to contend next year go get some future now. Teams like Balt. and the Nationals are at least trying to contend.

28.  By: aerichner on 12-04-2010 11:19:59
shortstop, what exactly are you blaming on the current regime? Seems to me like there are way more positives than negatives considering how Bavasi left the organization. If you count Figgins (or Figgens as some like to call him) as a negative then I think the club has done a fine job as I truly believe Figgins will be a helpful piece this year.

The BIGGEST problem right now is the 17 million per year that Ichiro gets and that wasnt Jack's fault. Now, Im looking at the Nationals and Orioles - the 2 teams you mentioned - and Im trying to figure out which BIG free agents theyve signed? Jason Marquis? Come on. My point is, the Mariners are trying to do it the same way too, by the draft and by trades. I dont think we're that far off so 2012 is realistic. If you dont like it, I can buy you a brand new Baltimore or Washington hat and send it to you ;)

29.  By: Rudolf on 12-04-2010 11:35:27
You are delusional, shortstop. You have no idea whatsoever that the fans are going to revolt after another dismal season. How did you become so fixed in your beliefs?

30.  By: shortstop9 on 12-04-2010 11:35:37
Please do send me those hats.I am not blaming Jack for Ichiro. He is a great player .But if we are rebuilding then do it!Ichiro would bring back some decent talent to start.Jack Wilson and Bradley are something we can blame on this regime, but they will still be gone next year so fill the spots with available talent and win some games or totally rebuild. Why hang on to Ichiro and lose 100 plus games? Same with Felix we won't win during his contract so what's the point? Teams like Balt. Oak. Wash at least are making offers to players who can help-so add an A's hat to that list and I will send you my address.

31.  By: shortstop9 on 12-04-2010 11:55:50
I never said they would revolt-just stop coming to games.Sort of how that has been happening the last few years.

Ok for example and this is just a point-if we made these 3 for 1 trades would we win more games:

Ichiro to Boston for Bard,Lowrie,Kalish

Felix to Yankees for Nunez,Montero,Joba

32.  By: Adam T on 12-04-2010 12:02:17
Shortstop - you are complaining that we aren't involved in big trades? Whaaaaaaa?

Does the name Cliff Lee ring a bell? Franklin Gutierrez?

Rationality and objectivity, please...

I'm surprised that Hoyer took that package for Adrian Gonzalez. Seems like Kelly has lost a bit of luster in the past year, and while I like Rizzo, Fuentes is probably a few years away. Great deal for Boston, especially if they get an extension done - which they likely will.

33.  By: shortstop9 on 12-04-2010 12:14:43
Lets talk about this year not last.I am surprised also-I would made them include Inglesias and Kalish instead of Fuentes.

How about this-dare to dream:

3B-Figgens
LF-Ackley
1B-Smoak
DH-Guerrero
C-Montero
CF-Gutti
2B-Lowrie
RF-Kalish
SS-Nunez

If we are gonna drop 100 lets do it with hope.

34.  By: aerichner on 12-04-2010 12:27:43
shortstop, it's Figg-i-ns.

Also, out of curiosity - you'd deal Felix to the yankees for Nunez and Montero (wtf?)...so who are the 5 SPs for the Mariners?

I seriously cant understand why the hell youd consider moving Felix right now.

35.  By: Jason A. Churchill on 12-04-2010 12:30:40
You're dreaming, alright. But it's not daring, it's pathetic.

You make it sound so easy, like throwing money at a player gets it done.

If you were Carl Crawford, a Texas native, who has spent his entire career in Tampa Bay and is now in the prime of your career, why in the world would you agree to spend it in Seattle?

Fact is, to get Crawford to even consider Seattle, so many things would have to happen first, including the addition of other big-name players to make the M's appear to be contenders right now. Not in 2012 or 2013, right now.

And, you'd have overpay for Crawford, severely, because the Tigers, Red Sox, Angels and Yankees are in on him, too, and they already offer a contending atmosphere, and will offer tons of money.

And THAT is why trying to sign Crawford doesn't make sense.

Think, shortstop9...

36.  By: StandinPat on 12-04-2010 12:38:00
"Same with Felix we won't win during his contract so what's the point?"

So now you know for a fact that the M's won't win for the next four years? If we are so far away that we can't create a winner by 2014, then how the hell does adding Crawford now help?

"C-Montero"

Also, this is not grammatically correct. I believe the rule is no "C" before or after Montero.

37.  By: JohnMcD on 12-04-2010 12:44:34
Wow people baffle me

38.  By: shortstop9 on 12-04-2010 12:48:22
Who cares how you spell Figgins? Thats the frustration we can't sign a player like Crawford. Will we ever if we continue to be stuck in the rebuild/win now situation? Montero is a catcher and if he doesn't play D make him your DH.Again those were just a point-trade what we have to put a young exciting product out there. It's just better than what we are doing.

You could even go Felix to:

Phil. Dominic Brown and some pitching
Tor: Drabek,Arencibia,Snider

39.  By: Adam T on 12-04-2010 12:56:02
Shortstop - Quit selling yourself short. How about this?

Vargas/Saunders/Jack Wilson for Justin Upton.

We can dream, can't we?

40.  By: shortstop9 on 12-04-2010 13:10:39
Ok so you are telling me Philly would not trade Dominic Brown and a pitcher for Felix?
Which one of those is as bad as your deal?

41.  By: aerichner on 12-04-2010 13:11:44
shortstop9 for GM!!! Fire Jack!!! Are we sure this isnt rosterbator??

42.  By: shortstop9 on 12-04-2010 13:18:27
Would you rather watch a group of young players that Ichiro and Felix would bring back or Bradley, the Wilson clowns,Branyan etc. Do you believe those 2 players would not bring back alot?

43.  By: FWBrodie on 12-04-2010 13:37:44
I'd rather watch Felix.

44.  By: shortstop9 on 12-04-2010 13:48:15
Me too but he can bring in a lot of talent. If it's a rebuild then lets rebuild.

45.  By: FWBrodie on 12-04-2010 14:07:53
Felix is already built. You don't rebuild for the sake of rebuilding. I'll give you Ichiro, but dealing Felix right now doesn't make any sense. He's a cornerstone, he's here for the forseeable future, he's entering his prime. That's the type of thing you build around.

46.  By: shortstop9 on 12-04-2010 14:20:29
That does make sense and I agree, but those 2 are all we have worth getting back anything.Just shows you there is not many other clubs that are in as bad of shape as ours.

47.  By: FWBrodie on 12-04-2010 14:43:14
GOOOOOO COUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

48.  By: shortstop9 on 12-04-2010 14:47:38
Dawgs baby!

49.  By: Edman on 12-04-2010 15:23:32
Felix and Ichiro are not the cause of failure. Ichiro's contract is not an anchor on the Mariners payroll. Felix is far too talented to even consider trading.

This concept that you trade away your best players because they're too expensive, and you'll get back cheaper players who'll make you just as good, is seriously flawed. There are teams like Pittsburgh who've tried that for years and gone nowhere.

It's bad contracts like Silva, Bradley, et al that have burdened Seattle. It's not having any minor league talent to back-fill the team to replace aging veterans. It's a whole series of problems. Jack is addressing those issues, but it's not going to happen over night. Signing Crawford isn't going to make the team magically better. The solution comes from many directions.

IMHO, Jack is taking full advantage of what he has to work with. The farm system will start becoming more valuable beginning next season. Another high draft choice will certainly help.

It is what it is, shortstop, and I suggest that you either start living in reality, or make a home in your fantasy world. But, you're not gonna sell your beliefs here. There are too many rational people.

50.  By: obeltran24 on 12-04-2010 16:28:00
shortstop9...a GM you are not. You are completely off in your assessment of what Ichiro will bring to the M's. Felix will get anything we want because he's young, fairly priced, and THE CY YOUNG AWARD WINNER! (A big reason to not trade him) Ichiro will not get us anything of value and certainly nothing worth alienating the few fans that have stuck by this team. He makes too much money.

51.  By: shortstop9 on 12-04-2010 16:29:57
Never said Crawford would fix whats wrong.I am living in reality and it is this team blows. It is just my opinion and I have never seen any you have written that make any sense either.

52.  By: Mackie on 12-05-2010 14:38:37
Ichiro is 37, and he makes $17 million a year for 11 and 12. He puts fans in the seats. He still gets on base, still steals bases, still plays well in RF. At his age and with as much as he makes, he won't bring anything of value in trade.

Let's just keep him, and let him finish his career with the Mariners. He isn't blocking anybody in RF at the moment, probably won't be in 11 or 12, will he?

53.  By: bunvt on 12-05-2010 20:46:12
Agree with Mackie, Ichiro's value isn't as high as we'd like to believe to other teams and I doubt the M's would get anything in return of high long term value. Doesn't hurt to entertain offers though...

54.  By: bunvt on 12-05-2010 20:48:28
Regarding Felix; He's a building block player and we have him long term, why not keep him while we're building since there's a chance he can be part of the 'hopefully' competing teams M's field down the line. If we suck when Felix's contract is closer to end, then I think you entertain trade offers.
