Prospect Insider - M's sign Capps
M's sign Capps

By Jason A. ChurchillBy 08-09-2011

The Seattle Mariners have agreed to terms with third-round pick Carter Capps, according to multiple sources, and as reported by Dan Popko of Cape Cod Times. Heads up to Lonnie Mathis for alerting me of the rumblings so I could wake up and look for confirmation.

Capps left the Cape over the weekend.

Capps, a right-handed pitcher from Mount Olive College in North Carolina, is another find by the M's in that area, thanks to area scout and Pulaski manager Rob Mummau.

Capps, I'm told, will receive "second round dough," which could be as low as $400k and high as about $800k. Mathis heard the number $500k, which sounds about right.

Capps is a physical right-hander with four pitches, including both a two-seam fastball and the four-seam variety. He also has a slider of which he likes to vary the velocity and a changeup that needs work.

As John Birtwell of ESPN Insider wrote last week, Capps attacks the botton portion of the strike zone.

There are still questions on his future role, but he's another above-average arm added to the system.

Good day for the Ms farm system. Carter Capps is added and Triunfel has been promoted to Tacoma to take Luis Rodriguez' spot.

I see Cory Scammell signed, too.

Great news, now let's get the other top picks signed.

I really hope we get Cron signed. He's the only player I am worried about. Hultzen and Miller should be in, it just might come down to the deadline to get them.

Good stuff, Jason.

Geoff Baker is reporting M's have also signed 19th round C Luke Guarnaccia from Palm Beach Community College.

He is also reporting that Capps will report to Clinton.

That's a wonderful article by Bitwell and at the time I read it I was really hoping they could get this guy signed. Looks like they did. I think he might be a real steal and only builds our pitching depth. Man is it deep.

Fantastic news! Glad to see Guarnaccia inked, too.

Hultzen and Miller are certainly going to sign. This leaves Cron, Marlette and Cohoes as three question marks remaining. If we can get two of those three I'm happy. 3 for 3 and I'm thrilled.

Capps really interests me. I like the fact that he took a chance and went to the Cape Cod League to increase his leverage in bonus negotiations. Had he struggled he could have lost some serious coin, but he took the chance and dominated in the CC League in a relief role.

Capps performance in the CC League was awesome! He racked up 30 innings over 14 games (started just one, on Aug 6th), walked 1, struckout 24, and had an ERA of 0.39!

I am very, VERY interested to see what role the Mariners decide for him. I can see his value as a reliever, but the thought of a guy who throws in the mid-90's as a starter with 4 pitches kind of makes me giddy :)

I really like Z's scouting team, they have a pretty good collective eye for talent. Nobody ever gets them all right, not even half right but they do pretty well. I wondered about Walker and Paxton when they signed them, now I get it. We're going to have some pretty good arms on the farm if they sign the drafted prospects. Trouble is there is not much talent at AAA right now.

Yeah they know what they are doing when it comes to pitching. Still wish they could find a few more diamonds in the rough on the hitting side.

Jason:

BTW, Rob Mummau is no longer the area scout in the Carolinas. He is in cent and north florida.

Yankees signed their fifth round pick for $1 million. I wonder if Bud called them to remind them that there one for all, and all for one?
