Prospect Insider - Official Tacoma Rainiers roster
Official Tacoma Rainiers roster

By Jason A. ChurchillBy 04-05-2011

The Tacoma Rainiers have released their official roster, so here it is.

Pitchers
Blake Beavan
Denny Bautista
Dan Cortes
Manny Delcarmen
Luke French
Cesar Jimenez
Justin Miller
Edward Paredes
Chaz Roe
Royce Ring
Chris Seddon
Chris Smith

Catchers
Josh Bard
Chris Gimenez

Infielders
Dustin Ackley
Leury Bonilla
Jetsy Extrano
Sean Kazmar
Alex Liddi
Matt Tuisosopo

Outfielders
Mike Carp
Greg Halman
Carlos Peguero
Mike Wilson

Notes: Clearly, Extrano and Bonilla are placeholders for Matt Mangini and Luis Rodriguez. Mangini is on the DL and Rodriguez is in the big leagues, likely only until David Aardsma returns from his own trip to the disabled list.

I believe Charlie Haeger is on the roster but on the disabled list.

Statistically one or more of these guys (other than Ackley) should finally show they belong in the big leagues. I have no idea who that might be.

Is Robles also on the DL? Also is there a chance the club calls up Blake Beavan before giving French another look?

Statistically? Not really. Outside of Ackley that's really not a very talented group. Cortes, Beaven, Paredes, and French are the ones with real chances to stick in the majors, but all in pretty low-impact roles (except Cortes, who could become a set-up man or even closer). Outside of Ackley the only real prospect in the position player group is Liddi, who will need to improve bigtime either on offense or defense to be considered a potential regular. As is, he's a fringe defender as a 3B and a fringe bat as a 1B, which means we're looking at another guy in the Dobbs/Mangini mold who probably ends up as an NL bench bat.

The rest - Halman, Peguero, Tuiasosopo, Carp - seem destined to top out at something less than major leaguer. Things change, but that's not a very good collection of talent.

It's dope collection of talent if you're trying win in Triple-A, though. Oh, yeah, right, that means nothing. I forgot.

Does this mean Tenbrink starts in AA?

Ya, Tenbrink is starting the year at AA.

Jason, Mike Curto stated something rather cryptic at his blog. He calls out the first four starters, and then states that the fifth starter is a secret and it won't be known who he is until the day of the fifth game. Curto reports that the fifth starter isn't even with the team yet, and won't join the team until the day of the fifth game.

Sounds to me that something is afoot!

No Limonta, Patterson, & Rivera. Oh well. Patterson looked like a fringe-MLB arm who might've been called up late after trades & injuries but there's a ton of candidates to do that.

CL Cortes
SU Declarmen
SU Bautista
MID Miller
MID Smith
LOOGY Ring
LOOGY Paredes
LOOGY Jimenez

That's a pretty solid AAA bullpen.

I wonder if Castro, Grube, or Haeger are the fifth starter or if it's someone from outside the org they're bringing in.

I also hope Luis Jiminez made a team, the reports from ST were encouraging.

Jason, I don't think they'll be sending Rodriguez down and carrying a 13-man BP when Aardsma is ready. Look for Tommy Wil to go down and stretch out as a starter, possibly Clinton, possibly High Desert, although I would guess Jackson, or Lueke to Tacoma--although I think Lueke stays up until Kelley is ready June-ish.

Lonnie, Stone reports that Fabio Castro is the 5th starter and they are stretching him out, in extended spring training, I guess, although he didn't specify that last bit.

Robles is on the 60-day DL, but someone, I don't remember who, has reported in the past day or so that they are not looking to bring him back until August. Didn't really specify why, or whether they've yet given up on him as a starter.
