Prospect Insider - One day

There is one day between now and the day pitchers and catchers report for spring training on February 13 -- the rest of the squad will report no later than February 18 with the first full-squad workout slated for the day after.

The M's first spring game is the annual charity game versus the San Diego on the 27th with their first Cactus League matchup the following day against the same Padres.

Minor leaguers won't report until the second week of March, though these dates are more of a deadline than the day most players show up for camp.

In any case, we'll be here daily to round up the thoughts and ideas as the club heads closer to the 2011 season; lending you all anything you might need to get yourself ready.

Radio Hit
I sat in with Brian Abker at KJR Friday night talking M's, you can catch that on podcast right here. (If you click the link, you can even listen while reading the rest of this post!)

In case you missed it
I wrote yesterday about the Seattle Mariners, and other clubs, and the idea of trading for left-hander Francisco Liriano of the Minnesota Twins.

The consensus seems to be that the Twins will not deal Liriano before the seasons starts unless they are overwhelmed with a deal that includes one premium pitching prospect. That pretty much eliminated the Mariners, at least if they are as smart as we think they are.

Pitchers and Catchers
Yep, pitchers and catchers officially report to camp tomorrow (Sunday) and will work out for the first time Monday. Players coming off injuries are usually in camp early, too, and those position players that wish to get a head start are certainly welcomes to show up early.

The pitchers will slowly start to play catch during week 1, gradually working that into some long toss that leads to throwing off a mound in week 2.

At last real baseball! Not as much expectation as this time last year but it does promise to be interesting. Who's going to do what and how good or bad will they be? If nothing else we have better prospects to follow this season. We all know the questions, let's hope we get some right answers this season.

There is no answer to that question.

Well, no news isn't necessarily bad news...

Here's the thing: I won't be breaking the news on Paxton. So until there is a reported signing, there really is no news. Even if one side comes out and claims something about halting negotiations, etc., until the deadline -- one week prior to 2011 draft day 1 -- there IS NO NEWS if there aren't reports that Paxton has signed.

Bad? Yeah.

100 losses? If things go wrong, sure. Decent chance of that. But they could also win 75 if things go right, just don't bet on that.

It's a true rebuilding year, and anyone in their right mind should expect 90 losses or more. Anything fewer, maybe that's marked progress.
