1. By: Slack on 12-19-2010 23:06:23 Great podcast as always! I have one question I'd like to ask. I remember you talking about some of the pitchers that the M's could go after (Bonderman, Francis etc) and saying that they were a fit for Safeco. In the case of pitchers, what makes a pitcher a fit for Safeco? I can see how a LHP is a fit because Safeco does tend to favor left handed hitters. But what else determines whether or not a pitcher is a fit for the M's ballpark?
2. By: Jason A. Churchill on 12-19-2010 23:09:23 Slack, Fly ball guys, for one. Any strikethrower fits, because it's really pitting that pitcher in the average park versus that same pitcher at Safeco for half his outings. Safeco wins. But in general I mean fly ball guys who can get away with more at Safeco than in other parks, who would inherently have a little more value to the M's than another club.
3. By: CyFelix on 12-19-2010 23:11:53 I've wanted the Mariners to sign Millwood since the offseason started. Was really unlucky with HR's. Even if he is a FB pitcher, he's still a nice fit for Safeco. IIRC, he had some nice control, innings eater and could serve a's a BOR starter. What's in the prospect handbook anyways, it sounds like a very tempting buy, especially for ~$5

Churchill on 12-19-2010 23:17:32 Top 30 with scouting reports, mini-reports on the NEXT 10... features on the developmentm or lack thereof, of specific prospects, an organizational outlook (where the strengths are, and grading those strengths on the 20-80 scouting scale in comparison to the rest of the league), a review of the 2010 draft, a preview of the 2011 draft, a look at how the M's stack up against the rest of the AL West when it comes to the farm system, Comparing the M's top 3 to other organizations' top three, Hot Seat Prospects, and a ton more, including a new feature -- Which organizations are good at scouting, signing and developing... pitching, catching, five-tool athletes, bats, etc, etc... Oh, and one of my favorite features: Scouting the Scouting Department. |
5. By: CyFelix on 12-19-2010 23:28:52 Definitely buying it then. Sounds awesome.
6. By: Jason A. Churchill on 12-19-2010 23:31:02 Should be out in early Feb. Need to be done by the time the amateur season starts, so the very latest in Feb 15ish. But that's pre-ST, so that is the goal.

8. By: Jason A. Churchill on 12-20-2010 11:08:04 josh, Chrome can't handle many RSS feeds. It works in Opera, Safari, FF.
9. By: Missthosepilots on 12-20-2010 12:45:55 Thanks for the insights! Enjoyable as always! Appreciate the work you both put into it. As you said, the word here in CO is that the Rockies did want Aardsma but were priced out. Rockies are looking for the blue light specials but do have real void with Street imploding more than a few times last summer/fall.
10. By: jgstecker on 12-21-2010 11:18:34 At what point should we become concerned/hopeful that the Miguel Olivo deal isn't going to happen? It's been nearly two weeks and no official word. I can't ever remember a delay this long between a story being broken and an official announcement. According to Baker, all that was left was the physical that was supposed to have happened last week. Its probably nothing big, but...
11. By: maqman on 12-21-2010 13:20:39 I imagine the delay in Olivo signing may have something to do with the need to clear a roster spot for him.
12. By: Jason A. Churchill on 12-21-2010 13:36:53 The only way the Olivo deal doesn't happen is if he fails the physical.
13. By: StandinPat on 12-21-2010 15:08:09 Rob Johnson to the Padres for a PTBNL. Does anyone know how long a team has to name said player?
14. By: Rick Randall on 12-21-2010 15:39:05 6 months.
15. By: Jason A. Churchill on 12-21-2010 16:12:51 180 days, to be exact. That player will be named no later than the end of Spring Training, however.
16. By: vandal08 on 12-21-2010 17:04:25 Any rumors/ideas of who it might be?
17. By: Shonn71 on 12-21-2010 17:06:56 It's a player OR cash... which means the Padres will probably just pick up Z's room service tab at the end of March.
18. By: Jason A. Churchill on 12-21-2010 17:07:10 I got nothin.. but it's not going to be a player that can make an impact in the least. Or it might be cash.
19. By: mazono on 12-21-2010 17:54:40 Hey PI Staff- in this instance would you prefer a warm body or cash coming back?
20. By: Jason A. Churchill on 12-21-2010 18:07:05 Doesn't really matter much in the end. If the "warm body" sticks in the org for 3-4 years, he makes a a hundred thousand, maybe two... and that's about all the cash would be in the end, at most.
21. By: Missthosepilots on 12-21-2010 20:29:18 Jason, rather than get a Padre from their AA team or such, are you a fan of MLB loosening up a bit with draft choices. Maybe allowing 3rd round or higher to be used in trades helping clubs look ahead rather than merely exchange warm bodies? Thankfully we had Wilson but since the Red Sox were still under the Babe curse, did some of it wear off on catchers when we gave them Varitek? Just kidding. Well, kind of! Everyone have a wonderful Christmas! Thanks for making my last year much brighter, even when the M's were dismal!
22. By: Missthosepilots on 12-21-2010 20:46:32 Opps - Higher as potentially 3rd round or so to the many rounds to follow.
23. By: Jason A. Churchill on 12-21-2010 21:02:43 I do think trading of draft picks should be allowed. But with big-time restrictions. Perhaps that's a post of its own.
24. By: Missthosepilots on 12-21-2010 21:16:34 Thanks. I would look forward to your thoughts on that. I have always thought such gives the teams on the wrong side of the tracks a means to help fleece (so to speak)those who are not as dependent on building from within.
