1. By: aerichner on 10-12-2011 14:00:50 I agree in that I like/want him, that he's NOT the middle of the order bat we're looking for and that we shouldnt target him in a trade. It'd be a different story if he were a FA. Too bad we couldnt get him when he was on the White Sox (they sold low).
2. By: Mackie on 10-12-2011 16:46:59 I agree that he would be a nice supplementary player for the roster, but he wouldn't really be a primary kind of player. He is a pretty good player, for sure. But for the price the Yankees would command, I hope the Mariners don't go there.
3. By: marinerforever on 10-12-2011 18:35:27 No way the mariners have no bussiness even making the call the mariners need a moto bat otherwise we are just repeating last years million different lineups mike carp will give you 270 25 320ob and cost one tenth what swisher will cost you for one year
4. By: Jason A. Churchill on 10-12-2011 20:29:28 marinerforever, While we agree on the general thought, I disagree that Swisher shouldn't be a target at all because of the fact that he's not a masher. He just can't be THE bat in any lineup, maybe not even the No. 2 bat. Also, you can add Swisher and still use Carp everyday at DH/1B.
5. By: Dmitriy1992 on 10-12-2011 20:52:11 I agree, Yankees will want too much for him but don't they have a club option? If so I wouldn't mind the M's trying to sign him for the right price. Although I don't like it that he is just so streaky throughout his career. The player I am wondering about is Logan Morrison. Is he available? and at what cost?
6. By: Jason A. Churchill on 10-12-2011 21:43:25 Dmitriy1992, The option is addressed in the piece linked above. He won't hit the free agent market. It's a trade scenario, like David Wright would be.
7. By: masonb on 10-13-2011 09:28:49 Logan Morrison would cost at least two top-10 prospects and probably a young major leaguer. Think something like Franklin-Seager-Paxton. The Marlins won't let him go for anything other than a ransom. He has his issues, but they are very high on him despite what has been overblown in the media. Plus he's cost-controlled. I wouldn't mind seeing a potential Pineda and prospects for Stanton deal. I'm pretty sure he would be "the answer" type of bat Jason is talking about.
8. By: rjfrik on 10-13-2011 11:40:32 I would love Stanton as well, but it will never happen. He's arguably the best young power bat in the game, in my opinion he is. Unless Felix was going their way in return I think they turn down any proposal sent their way. He's off the table. Swisher is meh for me. I could go either way. If we could steal him from the Yankees by giving them crap prospects then do it. If it takes any legitimate prospect I would say pass. The time to grab him was when the sox where dangling him and let him go for peanuts. That time has passed.
9. By: Edman on 10-13-2011 11:46:57 I agree with your assessment, Jason. Swisher holds some value with a far more established lineup, than for the Mariners. He's not enough of an upgrade over what Seattle already has. I'd rather give his ABs to Carp/?, than trade prospects to get Nick. A new bat in the lineup has to be an obvious upgrade in the outfield, or a definite upgrade to one of the weaker positions on the field. I say pass.
10. By: maqman on 10-13-2011 13:38:52 I don't see Swisher as a cost effective acquisition and am pretty sure the Yankees will pick up his option. Lo-Mo and Stanton would be serious options but the price would be prohibitive.
11. By: DKulich44 on 10-13-2011 14:25:31 There's a better chance the Mariners sign Babe Ruth and give him 600 AB than the Marlins trade them Mike Stanton. Come on, they just built a new stadium, they're not going to trade away their 22 year old superstar. Even if Felix was included, I still think they say no. That's asinine.
12. By: aerichner on 10-13-2011 15:55:23 DKulich44, I get you. You're 100% right but isn't it just better to ignore the silly comment than get into a discussion over something that isn't relevant to the post by Jason? After all, the suggestion is to go after Nick Swisher or not.
13. By: valencia on 10-13-2011 16:50:46 I like Swisher a lot. I think his bat could play well here. But anything more than a top 15 prospect and I don't think I go for it. A one-year rental for 3-4 WAR guy making $10 million isn't worth it. Plus the Yankees would ask for more than he's worth because they need him in RF.
14. By: Madison Mariner on 10-13-2011 18:18:09 Pretty sure that either Stanton or Morrison of the Marlins are pipe dreams. And while I'm not that high on Nick Swisher, a different Marlin may be available for a very reasonable price--Chris Coghlan. Recall that he was in LF for them before Morrison came up, then was moved to CF this year, which was an unmitigated disaster for them. With Infante returning at 2B, and the Marlins more likely to use Matt Dominguez or someone external to the organization at 3B, there's really no where for him to play I think. So why not trade for him and put him in LF? I doubt it would take much to get him. Perhaps we send them a somewhat decent pitching prospect(such as Erasmo Ramirez) and Michael Saunders, who would get a chance at playing CF for them(or, being a defensive 4th OF). Would it take much more than that? Just a thought. :)
15. By: Edman on 10-14-2011 02:23:44 Saunders has almost zero trade value, other than as a throw-in with a chance to turn things around. His value has dropped badly.
16. By: aerichner on 10-14-2011 10:39:40 Hasnt Coghlan's value dropped as well? ABs dropped from the 500s in 2009 to the 200s in 2011 and the OPS went from .850 to .718 to .664. It's a good idea but I think he'd just fall in with the same group as Wells/Robinson/etc and not be a clear upgrade the first day he steps into the clubhouse.
