Prospect Intel: Snow, Pryor

By Jason A. ChurchillBy 04-04-2011

Minor league camp ended over the weekend and players are headed for their destinations. I have a couple of assignments to pass long in this week's Intel, and the rosters will be out shortly.

But first, if you missed it live, check out my weekly segment on 950 KJR with Ian Furness and Jason Puckett by clicking here. And be sure to listen to the very end, I think the guys liked my sign-off line.

Aaaand, we're off ...

Forrest Snow, RHP
Snow was named the organization's pitcher of the spring and is looking to return to starting where he spent most of camp. Snow started 12 games at the University of Washington but was used exclusively in relief in his first pro season.

The right-hander continues to develop physically, now standing 6-foot-7 and weighing in at about 225 pounds. He's sitting 91-95 as a starter, toughing the higher digits within that range up to 70 pitches and dominating his own teammates and the rest of the minor Cactus Leaguers -- he didn't allow a run all spring.

It's not time to anoint Snow a top 10 prospect or anything, butif he's going to sit low 90s and touch the mid-90s and throw strikes in the process, he's going to pitch in the big leagues in some capacity.

Snow is on his way to High Desert to start the season.

Stephen Pryor, RHP
Pryor was out for a few weeks with a sore arm but after some rest is back at it and feeling just fine. He, too, is headed for High Desert, where a consistent second pitch will likely earn him a quick promotion to Double-A Jackson.

Teenagers
Word is the M's are going to take it slow and easy with their teenage pitchers Taijuan Walker and Vicente Campos, which could mean neither breaks with a full-season affiliate.

Another way to be cautious is to start them in Clinton and shut them down at a certain point, but the club may be concerned about pitch counts within outings -- which is to say they might be so limited into the 60-70 range that it can hurt the roster early and often having to cover so many innings.

George Mieses, however, is in line to pitch in the Midwest League.

The bats appear to be headed for a challenge, potentially including Guillermo Pimentel and Marcus Littlewood both.

Clinton's website is listing their opening day 25 - lists Snow on it. Is this incorrect?

I have been told that he's probably starting in HD... but Clinton not out of the question.

But those rosters mean zilch, they are just placeholders for the moment.

The HD roster lists two outfielders, to give you an idea of how not official they are right now.

I understand, I just was going off of the Clinton press release: http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110404&content_id=17379350&vkey=news_t500&fext=.jsp&sid=t500

Saying it was the "LumberKings' 2011 Opening Night Roster" made it seem official, so thought maybe that was legit

Jason, I read that Gerrit Cole is a big Yankees fan! I hope the pirates take him! I don't want to think about him leaving someday to join the Yankees. I like the info on Snow.

Snow is in Clinton to work on his starting role. Should he keep pace with his past performance he should move mid-year.

Snow is definitely on the Clinton roster, at least for now.

Snow is in Clinton now...and will be starting todays game. And who knows what the plans are for a struggling team like the Mariners. With a lot of solid prospects you have a great deal of trading potential.
