Prospect Insider - Scouting Michael Pineda
Scouting Michael Pineda

By Jason A. ChurchillBy 06-24-2010

While it wasn't quite the gathering it was on April 19, 2005 versus Sacramento when 19-year-old Felix Hernandex made his Triple-A debut, but there was a little extra energy in the press box at Cheney Stadium last night, despite the small crowd.

Michael Pineda, who dominated the Double-A Southern League and should have been asked to represent the Seattle Mariners on the World roster for next month's Futures Game -- though he very well could have been asked and the club, who has total control over which of their prospects play in the game, may have said no, in order to keep his focus on the tasks in front of him -- took the mound for the first time in Triple-A Tacoma Wednesday night, and didn't disappoint.

He pitched well, and lit up the radar gun. Subscribers can check out my scouting report and the video right here.

Thanks for the video .... as a onetime member of the Jordan Bread knot hole club , it was good to see pictures of Cheney Stadium again ... we need to come up with a name for the little jig Pineda does after his release ...

That little jig had me thinking he tweaked his ankle at least 5 times.

I wonder how much the shadows played into his performance.

There is something really exciting about following a player as he comes up through the minors like this.

I ended up snagging the HR that Evans hit in the 8th as I was leaving.

Pineda was outstanding. He's a big kid. Will have to sit closer than the cheap seats next time.

seems to fall toward first after delivery. sometimes a tick more than others. probably not a problem, but i can see Rajai Davis and a few others maybe trying to bunt down the third baseline to see how well he covers.

Felix falls exactly like that. Not a big deal.

Any word on addition draftee signings?

Don't know if you check them at all, Edman...but I'm of the opinion that BaseballAmerica does a decent job of staying on top of those on their web-site.

It's one of the few things I reference them for.

Scouring BA, it seems as though Charles Kaalekahi (15th round, prep righty from Hawaii), and Bennett Whitmore (24th round, prep lefty from California) signed recently.

We're at 31 signed in the '10 draft class.

Unless there's some hot-off-the-press signing I'm not aware of, but Jason or Chris are.

If any of the above is old news to ya, sorry.

Heres a question for anybody who wants to answer. I hear the talk about Strasburg making the all-star team. What about Cliff Lee. Do you think He's deserving? Or does he need to win a couple of more starts?

I think anybody with a 19-1 ratio in K/BB (through 86.1 IP) is going to get consideration.

If he's still in the American League by the time the managers need to make their pitching staff for the game, I'm thinking he's in.

Umm, Lee had better get serious consideration! If you take away the win-loss record and look at average stats per start, he's about the best pitcher in the majors with more than three or four starts... better than Halladay, and maybe a touch under Ubaldo Jiminez. Yeah, he deserves a serious All-Star bid, and possibly even the AL starter.

As for Lee, I went to the game Wednesday as well and was VERY impressed! Its not the best quality stuff, but I took some pics and a few short videos as well (I don't have access to the video(s) linked above).
