Prospect Insider - Sheets, Branyan, Options
Sheets, Branyan, Options

By Chris CrawfordBy 01-14-2010

There has been a lot of talk lately about how great the Mariner's off-season has been -- numerous websites and shows ranking it the best. If you believe the CHONE projections, the current roster is worth right around 88 to 92 wins, with around 15 to 20 percent of those wins coming from additions the past three months.

The best part of this is? They're not done. We can't post a single thread without someone asking a question about Ben Sheets, so here's the latest:

He's throwing for teams on Tuesday at his alma mater UL-Lafayette and there are several teams interested, with the Cubs showing the most interest, but Seattle has not been named. Tim Kurkjian had a report that said watch out for Seattle, but this is almost completely just based on Zduriencik and Sheet's previous relationship. It's possible the M's jump in on Sheets after seeing him throw, but theres not a lot of sizzle to the steak of acquiring him right now.

The other big news was the 'farewell' report about Russell Branyan. Maybe Branyan makes less sense than he did before the Kotchman deal, but as a DH option Branyan still would have value to the current club. There's been talk about Ryan Garko as well, and if Garko can play in the outfield he would make a lot of sense. The general consensus is he can not though. Some of the other names you may hear connected and might make sense depending on cost are Marcus Thames, Xavier Nady and Johnny Gomes -- the M's wont over pay for any of these names.

And that's just scratching the surface. Here's some more M's rumors that subscribers can view right here.

If you aren't a subscriber, I highly recommend you change that by clicking right here.

Sick coverage Jason. Nice Job

The deal outlined in the subscriber section was pretty sick.

crazy and awesome stuff. cant wait to see what next!

4.  By: The Great Pumpkin on 01-14-2010 22:12:11
That is very intriguing... It sure feels like Jack is not done yet, and a trade like that would put a cherry on top of this off-season. Are you expecting a move like that to be made? Even if it's not with those teams?

5.  By: Chris Crawford on 01-14-2010 22:17:20
I mean, I get to post this stuff, and I still get mind-boggled with the info Jason gets. Bonkers, simply bonkers.

Very interesting

I think we're going to see something of impact happen between now and the time the season starts. Spring Training will be fun that way, IMO.

8.  By: FelixElRey on 01-14-2010 22:33:52
I'm not a fan of the veteran we would get in the proposed trade at all!

9.  By: CrustyJuggler on 01-14-2010 22:49:00
Isn't said vet injured? He had some shoulder problems in '09 and wasn't supposed to be able to join the team again until April '10 after getting his shoulder scoped.

At least that was the news in November. All the same, he would be a bit of risk, healthwise. Kind of glad that deal fell through. We would have been giving up quite a bit to get back a mid rotation guy with health issues and a young pitcher that hasn't figured anything out at the ML level.

10.  By: CrustyJuggler on 01-14-2010 22:56:19
Check that.. just saw the latest and he (the vet mentioned) might miss a month of the 2010 season.

Yeah, really glad that deal didn't materialize.

You officially need a comment section for subscribers only. We need to be able to talk about this great material and/or ask Jason questions.

Or you could also just censor comments from subscribers from non-subscribers.

As an aside, I wonder what type of increase in BlogAd revenue Jason would get if he eliminated the subscriber section altogether. I bet twitter and mlbtraderumers would drive an incredible amount of traffic this way. Just thinking out loud.

12.  By: kyle_mahlstedt on 01-14-2010 23:01:28
Jason,

Wouldn't it make sense to assume that the M's are likely in on Orlando Hudson and are serious about acquiring him? Also, is there any hope to such a trade that was mentioned? Could it still happen? Seems like the news today from the team mentioned in the trade could be a major part in their consideration of the deal... hmmm

13.  By: kyle_mahlstedt on 01-14-2010 23:04:39
JASON,

In your subscriber post you said, "assuming Fister is the No.5" what about Ian Snell?

14.  By: CrustyJuggler on 01-14-2010 23:07:15
#12.
That does make sense given that trades parameters.

16.  By: masonb on 01-14-2010 23:43:38
Chris,

not to be nit picky, but Sheets is an alma mater at Louisiana-Monroe, not Lafayette. I'm an alma mater at both schools so I guess I'm more sensitive to it

17.  By: mymrbig on 01-14-2010 23:46:51
Jason, wow on the trade you mention. The younger guy the M'swould acquire makes me think of a lefty Morrow. Doesn't throw as hard obviously, but similar problems and similar upside. What do you think of him? The fact that such a big trade got to the point of that many names being exchanged tells me Jack Z really is leaving no stone unturned. I wouldn't have guessed that trade in a million years! Wonder if one of the holdups is that the M's and one of the other tems want to see Sheets throw in case he might affect the trade?

Also, I can't see why that team would want Lopez. Doesn't seem like an ideal fit with their current roster unless they moved another guy.

18.  By: mymrbig on 01-14-2010 23:54:13
And yes, I'm trying to drop just enough hints to drive the non-subscribers batty (or to subscription).

Glad to hear you will be back with ABCDESPN (d is for disney) for draft coverage again, you and klaw did a phenomenal job last year.

19.  By: 200tang on 01-15-2010 00:22:30
#13

Ian Snell would be the #4. I don't think Z wants to move him this off-season and he'll get a chance in the rotation.

I actually like Snell a lot. Wish I could find the article someone wrote about him a few weeks ago and his pitch selection/stuff, but I think he's a definite breakout candidate this year.

It definitely does seem like JackZ is doing everything he can to get a young starter with significant upside (who's not?). At least that's what it sounds like from rumors that have been thrown out this winter. Definitely agree with JAC about something big happening between now and ST.

20.  By: bl4dux on 01-15-2010 01:12:33
Well the Jason tidbit is definitely a Jack Z type of deal and player(s). I am all for power arms. It also would ironically save money to sign another player. I would be tickled if it came true.

21.  By: ccroghan on 01-15-2010 01:25:05
As long as said deal would not have us deal that lefty, I would be fine. I'm a big fan of his and I feel that he would be able to contribute more to our squad next the younger lefty we would be getting.

I love seeing Jack Z. think out of the box though. How could anyone see something like this coming? No rumors at all towards that deal before this. Awesome work as usual Jason.

22.  By: rjfrik on 01-15-2010 01:40:21
I have to say I'm very very glad that deal did not go through. Whew.

I think it would of been horrible. I'm not that big of a fan of the veteran lefty we would of acquired and the young guy is so damn unreliable. At this point in time I think the lefty we would be giving up is just as good as him. Yeah the other guy has more upside but I still like our guy better right now. Then giving up 3 other players for that lefty veteran? Wow. We can do better and that is why I'm sure the trade never materialized. I think if we left out our top prospect out of the deal then I would do the trade, because our MLB infielder in the deal could be replaced immediately.

Anyways. I know there is going to be some trade or acquisition in the next few months and I can't wait!

23.  By: Galway on 01-15-2010 08:15:01
Could a guy like Branyan remained unsigned by anyone by the begining of spring training?
Its an interesting commentary on how the free agent market has changed over the past five years due to economics, steroids, how power is viewed, shift to youth, sensitivity to injuries, etc... You hear about the dead ball era, roid era, there is definately a shift and a new era. I know I am stating the obvious, just thought the big picture was interesting.

I just subscribed. I tried to send an email to the address noted on the subscription page but it got bounced back.

Thanks,

I can't help but think that Milton Bradley getting regular time in the outfield = dangerous.

Not just in terms of the fact that he kind of sucks out there these days, but also due to potential injury concerns. I don't see the FO doing any sort of deal that relies on Milton Bradley, the outfielder.

26.  By: Mackie on 01-15-2010 09:10:42
Great work on digging up the rumor, and good analysis on Branyan and Sheets!

Re. the rumor, gee, if everybody subscribed, we could all be discussing it, eh! A few bucks a month isn't much to shell out if it means getting excellent info you can't get anywhere else. Sorry to sound like a walking advertisement, but subscribing here is worth it! Glad i did it! Those of you who aren't subscribed, get busy! 8-)

Agreed about the player the Mariners would be giving up. I'm a big fan, would hate to see him traded away. Kind of leery of losing some of the youth mentioned as well. Don't know enough about the two they would acquire to really say whether or not it would improve the M's, but it does seem that if they did this deal or one like it, their rotation could be one of the best, particularly in the front three.

27.  By: mymrbig on 01-15-2010 09:30:05
Jason,

On another topic, what do you think of Eric Byrnes if the D-Backs waive him to make room for LaRoche? His overall numbers have been terrible the past two years (.209/.272/.369 and .226/.270/.393), but he has battled through injuries and has been terribly unlucky (BABIP of .226 and .229, despite career of .282). Good defender (career UZR/150 of 5.6 in LF). He has a pretty consistent platoon split, so he would pair up well with either Langerhans or as an occasional caddy to Saunders. Really it all comes down to health, but if he is healthy, he would be a great 4th OF at league minimum.

28.  By: dawgncarolina on 01-15-2010 11:00:06
masonb, not to be nit picky, but you are not an alma mater of either school. They are both your alma maters. You are an alumnus of each.

touche, I stand corrected

30.  By: Edman on 01-15-2010 12:42:31
Byrnes on as a NRI, fine. Giving him an ML contract, now way. Let him earn his way on to the club, if he can.

31.  By: seatowndawg on 01-15-2010 13:03:35
I agree Edman, Byrnes would have to earn his way on. If he could get himself back to where he was he would be a interesting add to the outfield group we already have.

Funny that Byrnes is talked about and he gets designated for assignment.

Let the Tommy Everidge era begin!

34.  By: bohawk on 01-15-2010 14:30:35
Good stuff Jason and Chris. Really glad I subscribed.

If we could tweak the trade a bit; subbing out our lefty for something else, I'd like it. Their young lefty intrigues me.

35.  By: bohawk on 01-15-2010 14:34:23
And oh, by the way, Sheets pisses me off. How could anyone not want to live in Seattle and be a part of what the Ms are building?

I live on the East coast and would love to go to Seattle.

36.  By: JohnMcD on 01-15-2010 14:42:24
Heyman just tweeted that Felix and the M's are making progress on a deal of 5 or 6 years, but will do the 1 year thing to buy time....

37.  By: seatowndawg on 01-15-2010 14:44:31
Jason, Does Everidge have a shot at breaking camp as the righthand 1B/DH?

38.  By: junglist215 on 01-15-2010 16:02:35
35 Perhaps Sheets is just afraid of the Cascadia Subduction Zone. What a wuss

39.  By: brianc1279 on 01-15-2010 16:31:22
Jon Heyman says the M's have made progress on a 5-6 year deal with Felix Hernandez but will do the one year thing first to buy time. What does that mean?

40.  By: Chris Crawford on 01-15-2010 16:32:15
Sorry, I got my UL's confused. One's the ragin cajuns, the other is...a team in Louisiana.

It really is fantastic info, i'll pimp it one more time -- if you havent subscribed, youre really, really missing out.

41.  By: Chris Crawford on 01-15-2010 16:38:22
Basically, a one year deal for Felix puts him under contract and allows the team to not worry about the arbitration process. Never the less, its from Heyman, so take it with a grain of salt.

That's right, im confident enough to call out Jon Heyman. Watch out world.

42.  By: KingCorran on 01-15-2010 16:48:20
Hey guys,

Are we assuming that the one year would be a 'part' of the 5-6 year deal being negotiated? Or, that they would agree on a one-year deal, and then tack on a 5-6 year extension (which would actually buy out 4-5 FA years rather than 3-4)?

That would seem to make as much or more sense than negotiating a one-year deal which will be void before the offseason is over... even just as a way to buy time.

43.  By: 200tang on 01-15-2010 19:26:58
#42

Like Chris said, it just buys out his arb this year. Always a good idea to avoid it if you can. However, that year wouldn't be part of the extension what so ever. Next off-season they would likely try and work out a long term extension.

Considering it's from Jon Heyman though, you can probably just put it in the back of your mind.

44.  By: Jason A. Churchill on 01-15-2010 21:06:42
The one year deal would only remain if the two sides failed to complete the extension by the start of the regular season.

Otherwise, the extension WILL begin in 2010, despite the agreement on a one-year deal for this season.

Just get Felix locked up!!!

46.  By: Lailoken on 01-16-2010 00:25:14
I like the idea of Byrnes as the 4th OF with a righty stick. His OPS vs. lefties over the last three years (mind you the last two he's been injured & not so great) is .788 despite missing a bunch of time due to injuries. His career OPS vs. lefties is .857. He's not a loft-swing slugger either so his line-drive-minded swing translates as well to Safeco as a non-elite righty hitter can. Byrnes plays a mean OF too even if injuries mean he's not a pure CF anymore. His hamstring was better last year compared to 2008 & his UZR reflects that. Choppy playing time (slumps, Upton, Parra, & a fractured hand) contributed to his lackluster 2009 at bat. Granted, he has to come cheap but I like what he brings to the table over players like Hairston & Baldelli. Reed Johnson & Xavier Nady are perhaps better bets but come with a bigger price tag. Maybe we can ship them Ian Snell a la the Hall deal so that each side gets some salary relief.

47.  By: studentofthegame on 01-16-2010 01:07:46
Random observation....

I was driving past Safeco today on First Avenue. I was looking at all the pictures that are posted of M's players. It was really interesting to note that about half of the guys on that wall do not play for Seattle anymore. Off the top of my head was Silva, Chavez, Morrow, Branyan and Batista. There were probably more, but I can't remember them. At any rate it was a very clear illustration of just how much the M's have changed, again.

I am really interested in seeing what 2010 brings.

By the way Jason. Adrian Gonzalez for Lopez and Cheesepuffs? I have to wonder if that huge deal you talked about in the premier section was the answer to my question. The big player transaction?

Thanks for the great coverage!

Go M's!

48.  By: 200tang on 01-16-2010 13:31:56
#46

Byrnes was designated for assignment and will most likely be released in the next few days. You'll be able to pick him up for free, assuming he wants to come here, so you don't have to worry about price.

49.  By: MarinersArmy on 01-16-2010 14:30:32
studentofthegame,

Sign up and you'll find out (it's cheap!). I just did; very interesting! Whatever they do, I believe they must get a #3 SP before the season starts...

From reading the subscriber section, it goes to show we should never assume who's the next player coming here. JZ leaves no stone unturned and you really never know who's next! Who here really called the Lee trade? Or Kotchman? Or Figgins signing?

I love it. Go M's!

Thanks Jason on the info; one thing I like that you do more than others is the minor league detail you provide. Keep up the great work! Much appreciated...

50.  By: Lailoken on 01-16-2010 15:49:11
200tang

Knew Byrnes had been designated. That means the D-backs have ten days to trade him. Now, I doubt teams rushed to their cell phones offering AJ Hinch the world but somebody out there likely thinks Byrnes is worth a million dollar shot & the D-backs likely want those million dollars. Trading Snell is what drives my proposed deal though. Having the D-backs assume more, if not almost all, of Byrnes' salary too would seem fair to me in combination with taking Snell off the M's hands. They can at least stand to gain something for their sunk costs in a bit of money & the potential for Snell to contribute. In the same light, Snell is likely a sunk cost for the Mariners as he is amply replaced by Fister &/or Vargas for a fraction of his salary. Like GMZ did in the Hall-Kotchman swap it would be pretty neat if he could swap a sunk cost (Snell) for something useful (Byrnes). The money saved could then go towards a better starting pitcher. Snell made sense as a reclamation project when the Mariners weren't contenders. Don't know if he makes as much sense now that a better starting pitcher could make a big difference in standings with those couple extra wins.

51.  By: DKulich44 on 01-16-2010 16:25:52
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that at this point Snell is more useful to us than Byrnes, and I don't find it particularly close. Snell has good stuff, just needs to get his head right and he can be a league average pitcher or better. Byrnes is older, can only play the OF, and can't really hit. There's no room for improvement here. This team needs a utility player more so than a 4th outfielder. Langerhans and Byrnes would be a redundant use of two roster spots besides being opposite handed and Safeco would play more to Langerhans advantage.

52.  By: Edman on 01-16-2010 17:26:00
The big why's

Why pay a million for Byrnes, when you could likely sign him for much less?

Why trade a useful arm like Snell, when you don't have to?

Snell is amply replaced by Fister? I don't think so. Snell has the ability to be a #3. Fister would be lucky to hold down the #5 spot.

Trading for Byrnes should cost JZ his job, if he did it. There's no reason to trade for what you can likely get for next to nothing.

53.  By: 200tang on 01-16-2010 18:05:32
Definitely agree with 51/52. Snell has always had good stuff and just needs to learn to use it better. He's definitely more valuable than a RH platoon OF. I honestly don't want to give up anything for Byrnes and his 0.5 WAR upgrade when there are still guys like Tatis out there.

54.  By: 200tang on 01-16-2010 18:07:31
Actually, the one thing I disagree with 51 is that Byrnes 'can't hit'. He's hit lefties well even while dealing with injuries the past 2 years and he had a low .200 BABIP in that time frame. I think he's better than the overall numbers show, but even so, get Byrnes for free, otherwise move on.

55.  By: bladestunner316 on 01-16-2010 18:09:42
Edman,
Technically I believe Snell has the ability to be a #2. I have sympathy for the guy knowing what depression disorders can to do a person namely myself. I really hope he can pull it together this year. At least he is in a positive environment and a winning environment.

56.  By: Lailoken on 01-17-2010 11:31:48
You guys are far higher on Snell than I am. His fastball velocity has sunk every year since that stupendous 2006 season he had. That fastball is now getting pounded. Right-handed starters that sit near 91 MPH usually supplement with better offspeed stuff. His K/9 in 2009 dipped down to 5.52. That would be fine if he didn't walk a ton but he's walked over 4 batters per 9 over his entire career. With him missing the plate so often he doesn't go deep into games & averaged just over 5 innings a start last year. That is not very helpful when you want to win a division. At least Fister or Vargas will go 6 & save the bullpen. I consider Snell's salary a big deal & the the fact that he's occupying a valuable rotation spot on a team that could go far only reinforces that notion. That salary could go towards Sheets/Bedard/Harang/etc. instead. I'd rather pay 1 million for Byrnes & 8 million for Sheets than say 4.25 for Snell & 4 million for Nady. The budget is getting tight. The point about a utility player being a better fit is totally valid though. I would still prefer Tatis & an insurance for SS like Amezaga than Byrnes. As much as I want to root for Snell with his troubles... I just don't see it.

Here's a good read on him too:

http://www.baseballdailydigest.com/2009/12/30/what-happened-to-ian-snell/

57.  By: DKulich44 on 01-17-2010 12:43:14
56 - I'm not high on Snell by any means, but a little time with Adair can't hurt. I'm just more high on Snell than overpaying for a guy like Byrnes. We don't gain much other than an overpaid 4th/5th outfielder. Worst case scenario for Snell is he becomes a bullpen arm, best case scenario is Byrnes is a platoon player. I'd take Snell's worst case over Byrnes best at this point. A guy that can play infield positions like Tatis is more important than a guy who plays the outfield. I'm just not ready to give up on Snell just yet, but I'm not giving him a long leash either.

58.  By: Lailoken on 01-17-2010 13:00:36
If this were last year or if the Lee trade didn't happen I'd feel the same way. With the division title much more likely at this point my tolerance for risky players with big salaries occupying key spots diminishes. Byrnes aside, I'd be happy if the Mariners could move Snell's salary.

59.  By: Edman on 01-17-2010 13:03:35
Lailoken, you think some other team is going to bail Seattle out of his salary? Not a chance. The idea of making a trade, so save what is virtually nothing, in major league salary terms, is not a good idea.

Snell has issues, but so did this year's AL Cy Young award winner. If Snell gets straightened out, he could be a good guy to have in the #4 or #5 spot in the rotation. Byrnes, will always be an aging outfielder with the ability to play no other position.

And as for Snell's drop in velocity, I'm not that concerned. In many of the games I watched last year he was often in the 93 MPH range with his fastball. And, he had a few 95-96 MPH fastballs. It's not like he can't throw hard.

I'll take my chances on a guy like Snell, long before I'd burden the 25 man roster with an aging outfielder who can't stay healthy.

60.  By: 200tang on 01-17-2010 15:08:28
@Lailoken

Feel free to believe Snell doesn't have it anymore, but don't lie about his velocity.

http://www.baseballdailydigest.com/2009/12/30/what-happened-to-ian-snell/

His velocity hasn't changed, it's his release point that is the problem and makes his stuff look slower than it is. By the way, that's a great article and everyone should read it.

61.  By: DKulich44 on 01-17-2010 15:42:17
60 - Read that article when it popped up on USSM, and what it tells me is that if your run of the mill blogger notices this guys who work for MLB teams probably have too. If they haven't I'm sure some where some one will point them to the article. Another thing, if it's truly a mechanical issue, it's probably fixable with enough repition. Don't forget this is the same Ian Snell that struck out 17 AAA hitters just this past year. I don't think you can luck yourself into doing that, as well as what he did in his other few starts in the minors. He's still relatively young and a little tinkering here or there in the spring might help him work out a couple of these issues. He's not at all the sunk cost many are making him out to be. Byrnes' contract is definitely worse, especially if you're using him as a 4th/5th outfielder. Wait until he goes through the 10-day period and get him on a minor league deal, if no one else picks him up, instead of taking on that huge salary.

62.  By: 200tang on 01-17-2010 16:37:29
Also, while we're on the subject of 4th/5th OF/IF.

http://www.proballnw.com/01-2010/the-forgotten-man/

"There is, however, one player that Mariners’ fans seem to have overlooked in the midst of the player acquisition frenzy the organization has undergone this offseason. Indeed, this player is already a Mariner.

Matt Tuiasasopo.

Penciled in to be the team’s starting third baseman before Figgins was signed, Tuiasasopo has largely become a forgotten man during the course of the offseason. He’s actually a beautiful fit for the role the Mariners have open"

Great article by Conor. I think you would have to make the decision after seeing Tui out in LF, but he does seem to fit the role perfectly.

63.  By: Lailoken on 01-17-2010 20:07:54
Taking on Byrnes' contract was never the idea. Snell can be okay but that 17 strikeout performance in AAA was the anomaly teaser performance of the year. Hope he shows the moxie to pitch inside. His overreliance in his fastball may have resulted in the occasional loss of velocity too. Taking a bit off of the fastball & putting it where batters expect it (the outside corner for Snell) is generally not a good idea unless the pitches' movement improves. Tui sure has the athleticism & arm to play LF. Certainly is the right price. Even with limited power early on (until the last couple years really) his career minor league OPS versus lefties is .811 but was .963 last season.

If JZ makes a move to pickup a #3 or 4 SP (as expected), then Snell can move to #5, I like him there. And have you seen what he did in his last nine games of '09?

He went 5-1 and his ERA dropped a full point (5.84 to 4.84).

Tui hasn't been forgotten- he just doesn't have the bat they will need- just my OPINION Pat- so if you disagree with me OPINION pat just say so- no need to attack the writer.

Random off topic question for anyone who can answer: what channel(s) do most of the Mariners game come on? I'm living in San Diego and trying to figure out what packages to order so I can watch the games this year. To my knowledge most of the games came on Fox Sports Northwest but would I be better off ordering the MLB package? Thanks

masonb,

I also have that problem living in LA. The last few years through DirecTV I've ordered MLB Extra Innings and it seems like they show a lot of M's games. I think it was either Saturday or Sunday where the day games usually aren't shown, but aside from that they show most games.

I live in L.A. as well and if you order Extra Innings through Time Warner Cable you get all the M's games, every one.

Almost all the games are on Fox Sports NW, so if it's just the Mariners you want to watch, I would just order that.

Fox sports does show all the games but unless you live in the Seattle area you will not be able to see them. I live in Reno and thought that would be a cheap way to watch them, unfortunatly you have to pony up the cash for MLB extra innings. Off topic does anyone know what happened to the website Mariner Minors?

I live in Montana and through DirectTV I add the FoxSport package for $12/month and get 99% of all Mariner games. I then cancel the FoxSport addition after the regular season OR playoffs, so I only have to pay 6-7 months out of the year... A LOT CHEAPER than MLB INNINGS!!!

My suggestion is to call DirectTV directly and ask them about the FoxSport package (NW Sport Package). Make sure you specify that you're getting the channel with the Mariners...and you'd be good to go for $70-80 for the year!

Jay Yenich from Mariner Minors did a post that with short notice MVN was closing down. Another website had already hired him. He was excited. Said they were designing a banner for his new website. I would imagine it'll be called Mariner Minors still. Otherwise, I'd just keyword search Jay Yenich. BTW, all his old work will be archived there too according to his last post.
